Llamas

I have to admit, I have a love/hate relationship with llamas. I think this is because they are so much like people with their intelligence and moods. They can be cantankerous brats on occasion (well, everyday when it comes right down to it). On the plus side, they have wonderful fiber, are easy keepers, excellent mothers, and the males make exceptional guardians. We live in a coyote ridden area in Northern Indiana, and we have never yet lost an animal to these predators. I have personally witnessed our stud llama Godfrey running off these varmints. Now we have a guardian Maremma dog, Anya, so the llamas do not have to work so hard. Yet, I highly recommend one to anyone who needs a silent, unbarking livestock guardian. Generally, we have male crias available year round. Breeding females are also for sale at any given time. As far as fiber is goes, I would say that llamas are severely underrated. While it is true that some llamas have a lot of guard hair, the majority that we care for have uniform, soft, silky fleeces. Since we do not show our llamas, we shear them every year. They produce a yearly staple of 4-6 inches, ample length for handspinning. Yearling fiber is especially soft and fought over here on the farm. We offer raw llama fiber, llama/wool blend rovings, and llama top on a limited basis. Please check out our Fiber page if you would like to view some samples, or e-mail us and we can mail you some. |

Jet Black, Noreen's son, who was sold as a guardian llama in 2004, and who has exceptional cria fiber.

Angry Hufflepuff, a rescue cria, who in spite of this photo, is really very sweet.
